6 Scenic Places to Go Camping in Morgantown, West Virginia
John Denver might have made West Virginia’s natural beauty famous when he sang, “Take me home, to the place that I love,” and when you see the landscapes of the Mountain State, you’ll understand what he was singing about. These six camping spots around Morgantown will sweep you away with their scenic views.
Coopers Rock
Coopers Rock State Forest offers expansive views of the Cheat River, and the 25 campsites are all located near a bathhouse with showers. Right next to Coopers Rock State Forest is Chestnut Ridge Park, which offers both cabins and camping areas and access to the state forest.
Monongahela National Forest
Tygart Lake
The 10-mile (16-kilometer) lake created by a dam on the Tygart River offers landscape views where the mountains sink into the water. Tygart Lake State Park offers camping, a lodge, and cabins, while the Pleasant Creek Wildlife Management Area on the edge of the lake provides a more rustic experience, with 40 campsites that have no access to showers or plumbing.
Ohiopyle State Park
On the edge of the Laurel Highlands and just across the West Virginia border in Pennsylvania, the Ohiopyle State Park provides scenic views of the Youghiogheny River Gorge.
Deep Creek Lake
This 3,900-acre man-made lake in western Maryland is known for summer water sports, but the water and the mountains create a landscape you want to soak in any time of the year.
Lake Habeeb
For more scenic mountain lakes, check out Rocky Gap State Park and Lake Habeeb. With 278 camping spots, you can be up in the forest or down by the lake.
