Awesome Things to Do for Free in Kosovo
Kosovo, the youngest country in Europe, is one of the least visited places in the Balkan Peninsula. Tourists prefer more famous destinations, such as Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia, but what they don’t know is that this small country is fascinating and has plenty of things to do without spending a cent. Read our list of awesome things to do for free in Kosovo.
Visit the Ethnographic Museum of Pristina
The capital city Pristina is home to several interesting places to visit. One of the best is the Ethnographic Museum Emin Gjiku, housed inside a gorgeous Ottoman-era house from the 18th century, a declared monument of culture by the government. An English-speaking guide leads the visitors through the rooms, showing them the country’s traditions and customs. The entrance is free, but, if you want, at the end of the visit you can leave a tip in the special box.
Walk through Gërmia Park in Pristina
Gërmia Park is the green heart of the Kosovar capital. This huge park, located in the northeast of Pristina, is the perfect place to escape from the town and relax surrounded by nature. It is part of the Rhodope Mountains and has an abundance of fauna and flora. Gërmia is the place where locals like to spend their free time strolling, chatting, and relaxing without spending a thing.
Enjoy the panoramic view from the fortress of Prizren
To admire breathtaking panoramas without spending a euro, climb up to the fortress of Prizren. Prizren is the most important cultural town in Kosovo and home to one of the nicest old centers in the Balkans. To admire the view of the town, you have to climb up to the fortress for about 10-15 minutes, but the views are worth the effort.
Visit the Sinan Pasha Mosque
Prizren is home to some of the most beautiful mosques of Kosovo. While it is a multicultural town, the majority of people in Kosovo are Muslim, and the country has beautifully decorated mosques that are worth a look. The Sinan Pasha Mosque of Prizren is one of the oldest and most beautiful mosques located in the Balkan Peninsula, open to everyone. The entrance is free; just don’t forget to look up to admire the perfectly decorated dome.
Visit the countryside
The most enchanting part of Kosovo is undoubtedly represented by the mountains. But they are mostly frequented by professional hikers who participate in organized tours, and even if these tours don’t cost a fortune, they are not free. Nonetheless, Kosovo also has an incredibly beautiful and idyllic countryside that can be easily appreciated just by moving from one town to another.
Visit the Decan Monastery
Decan Monastery is one of the highlights of the country, located at the foot of the mountains and surrounded by a pine forest. The 14th-century monastery is located just 15km south of Peja and is a must-see for everyone who travels to Kosovo. The best thing to do here is to visit the interiors to admire the icon paintings in the church.
