Beautiful Beaches in Denmark You Didn't Know Existed

The shallow lagoons along Lønstrup Beach are ideal for a relaxing day by the sea. Take a walk along the sandy beach and let the little ones splash around in the calm waters. Lønstrup – which is known as the ‘city of artists because it’s a popular destination for glass blowers, jewel makers and all kinds of craftsmen – is located at the northwestern part of Denmark near Skagen.

Due to its unique location in the west of Jutland plus the breathtaking landscape with the long, sandy beaches and dunes, Søndervig is one of the country’s most popular summer holiday destinations. In 2014, Danes voted it as Denmark’s best beach. The wide, white sand Søndervig Beach is accessible for wheelchair users and baby carriages, and from the end of June to the end of August there are lifeguards all day long.

Between the cities of Hou and Bisnap spans the six-kilometre Bisnap Beach. Bisnap, as well as the nearby Hou and Møllestenen, are white-flag beaches, meaning they have ideal weather conditions for swimming and they offer lifeguard services. Bisnap Beach is located close to Aalborg, on Jutland’s east coast.

Palm Beach is an exotic oasis in the north of Denmark. Every year from the beginning of June to mid-September, around 70 palm trees imported directly from the Canary Island are set on the 400-metre beach in Frederikshavn, creating a tropical scenery. Palmestranden is a child-friendly beach equipped with loungers and parasols. The barbecue area, the beach volley courts and other outdoor facilities are open to the public all day long.

Blokhus Beach at Jammerbugten, Denmark’s popular summer destination, is a real favourite among windsurfers as the area’s weather conditions are ideal for water sports and several events such as the kite festival, which takes place here every year. The sandy beach is also known among locals and tourists who want to explore the northern part of the country and spend their holidays amid nature. Located 36 kilometres from Aalborg and less than two hours from Skagen, Blokhus Beach is a great stop for those headed up north and want to discover Jutland’s hidden corners.

Rågeleje Strand is for those who want to go off the beaten path and enjoy a day at the beach away from the noisy crowd. Perched on the top of Zealand just 50 minutes from Copenhagen, the former fishing village of Rågeleje has now become a tourist destination due to its breathtaking and diverse landscape. On the feet of a broad heather-covered hill, you’ll find Rågeleje beach, where locals sunbathe and swim lazily in the Kattegat Sea’s waters.

Blåvand Beach spans 40 kilometres on Denmark’s western coast, so there are dunes of sand and North Sea’s crystal waters as far as the eye can see. Many families head to Hvidbjerg Strand Camping & Resort for their summer holidays as it’s located right next to a beach known for its shallow and calm waters. Even though Blåvand Strand is a popular destination due to its size, it rarely feels packed. But if you want to feel like you’re the only person on the beach, head to the coast’s northern part.

Hornbæk Strand at the homonymous city in the north of Zealand is the largest and most visited beach in the region. Leisure facilities, including a playground as well as cafés, restaurants and a barbecue area, are situated around the beach. And from the 24th of June when Danes celebrate the Midsummer’s Day up to the 14th of August, two lifeguard stations are open.
