Love it when ocean views accompany your walk? Tackle epic cliffs, stroll along pristine beaches and enjoy pretty little seafronts on the best coastal hiking trails on the planet.

Coastlines tend to create natural walking trails – it’s easy to follow, just keep walking alongside the sea. It also just so happens that seaside walks spring up a whole lot of viewpoints and scenic spots, from hidden beaches and cool coves to dramatic cliff faces, which offer vast ocean vistas and incredible views of nesting birds, rock pools and inlets. Coastal hikes also offer the ideal resting points, be it a picturesque picnic stop, a beach to relax on, or the cooling nature of sea breezes and quick dips in the ocean. So, if you love exploring beautiful coastlines on foot, why not do it with an expert local guide and a small group of like-minded travellers? This selection of Culture Trips include guided coastal walks along some of the most beautiful stretches of shoreline on Earth.

Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

Ireland, for cliffside views along the Wild Atlantic Way

Islands are obviously a great place to start if you’re looking for seaside walks, and Ireland is no exception. In fact the emerald isle’s heady mix of rich green countryside and a rocky border, which has been battered by the Atlantic Ocean for centuries, has created one of the most spectacular coastal routes there is. Our week-long road trip in Ireland traces the coastline from Dublin down to the West Cork Coastal Route and up along the famous Wild Atlantic Way to Galway. You’ll get to do the Scilly Walk from Kinsale, hike to the headland of Slea Head and day trip to a beautiful uninhabited island, exploring on foot and stopping for a picnic with a view. The highlight of the Wild Atlantic Way is without doubt the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher, where towering sandstone structures are relentlessly pummelled by the force of the Atlantic. It’s the ultimate example of the ocean’s beauty and brutality rolled into one. A hearty helping of Guinness, whiskey and traditional Irish cuisine will fuel your memory-making adventures along the Irish coast.

The suspension bridge of Storm River mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park, along South Africas Garden Route

South Africa, for mountain views and incredible national parks

South Africa’s Western Cape boasts some of the most unique and impressive stretches of coast on the planet, spanning both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. This loop trip is a great way to see as much of it as possible in 11 days. We’ll start and end in Cape Town, a city famous for its waterfront. We’ll stay at a hotel in Sea Point, so you can spend the mornings strolling down the pretty promenade, before taking a cable car ascent of Table Mountain, for a far clearer view of the vast oceans at Africa’s tip. We’ll also visit the Cape of Good Hope, Africa’s most southwesterly point, and go on a boat cruise in the gorgeous seaside town of Knysna. Then it’s on to Tsitsikamma National Park, a thrilling stretch of luscious parkland where the verdant forest and fynbos of South Africa meets the crashing waves of the ocean. Explore cosy coves, hidden beaches and stunning viewpoints throughout the park, as well as crossing the dramatic mouth of Storms River via suspension bridge.
