The Best Gyms in Auckland, New Zealand
Finding the right place to work out can sometimes feel as much of a feat as meeting your fitness goals. Luckily, Auckland has plenty of gyms to suit all health needs and exercise affinities. Here’s a look at some of the establishments making a positive difference.
The Olympic
The Olympic is a good option for those seeking a solid all-rounder: there’s a heated Olympic-sized swimming pool and a vast array of fitness classes (ranging from yoga to bootcamp circuit training) for members to enjoy. Its team of personal trainers, physiotherapists and nutritionists are also available to offer guidance and advice for those who need it. The gym is located in Newmarket, and in the 1940s – well before it was converted into a fully-fledged workout facility – this was the first place in New Zealand to have a 50-metre (164-foot) swimming pool installed.

CrossFit NZ
CrossFit NZ has been providing its expertise and high-intensity workouts since 2008, and was the first gym of its kind in New Zealand. Classes combine weightlifting, endurance training and gymnastics to help members address all aspects of their fitness. Newcomers are also invited to take private introductory classes in order to understand what crossfit entails. There are classes for all levels, and the gym has also created a special workout plan for kids.
YMCA Auckland
Besides being one of the city’s oldest gyms, YMCA Auckland is also known for being one of the most affordable and inclusive. Its primary focus is on bringing community values to all things related to health and wellness, meaning there are classes, activities and programmes geared towards all ages and fitness levels. The Auckland city gym also boasts its own stadium, which hosts a large selection of social sports leagues.
Les Mills Auckland
Les Mills has various locations across New Zealand. It has gained quite a mass following thanks to its quality facilities, plus its unique group fitness classes covering everything from cardio to endurance. The Auckland City club has actually been around since 1968 (in fact, it was the first one to open) and features a women’s only gym, full cardio area, an external basketball area, a physiotherapy clinic and supplement store to name a few of a large assortment of amenities.

Boxing Central
Mt Eden’s Boxing Central has been a leader in its knockout discipline since 2001. The gym offers everything beginners and boxing pros alike could ever need to keep fighting fit: world-class training facilities, gloves and equipment to buy or hire, personal instructors, boxing-based fitness classes, junior boxing and even yoga for those wanting to strengthen their minds as well as their muscles.
The Form Room
From the outset, Ponsonby’s The Form Room has stood out for its exclusivity. Not only because it is touted as New Zealand’s first ‘luxury gym’, but also because of its strong commitment to making every programme personalised to one’s individual needs, both nutritionally and fitness-wise. Sessions are by appointment only to ensure members are given plenty of privacy to work on themselves.
Habitat For Fitness
Habitat for Fitness is renowned for its focus on making exercise fun and inclusive. The facility, based in Kingsland, will spoil you for choice when it comes to classes, whether you’ve got an affinity for strength training, are wanting to try a barre-based workout, or are simply looking for an engaging way to tone those muscles. Free trials are available for newcomers, and the gym’s personal trainers are well-known locally for their motivational approach to fitness.
Shape in the City
If a bootcamp-based workout is more to your tastes, Shape in the City is the place to go to. On weekdays, personal trainer Shaun Clack offers his expertise in a number of disciplines – including strength and power training, cardio and boxing – at the Exercise Room in Parnell. For women wanting to jump-start their fitness journey, Rachel Clack offers a series of dynamic Girls Squad bootcamps that run in six-week cycles at the Auckland Domain.
