Relive Your Childhood at the New Dr. Seuss Museum in This U.S City
Theodor Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. He would go on to become one of the most famous authors of children’s literature of all time, under the name of Dr. Seuss.
It’s understandable if you didn’t know the man’s real identity. For someone whose work has so profoundly changed childhoods around the world, his life remains somewhat shrouded in mystery.
However, it won’t stay that way for long. Last June, a brand-new museum dedicated to the iconoclastic author opened up in Springfield.
The Amazing World of Doctor Seuss is a brand-new, permanent museum in the author’s hometown of Springfield, MA. It’s spread across two separate floors: one for introducing children to the work of Dr. Seuss and another for displaying Theodor Geisel’s, and his family’s, personal memorabilia.
On the first floor you’ll find a mammoth exhibition that encourages kids to get hands-on. They can play rhyming games, explore new sounds and words, and invent their own stories inspired by Seuss’s tales. Another section called “Young Ted in Springfield” explores the author’s childhood and shows how Springfield influenced his work, while “Readingville” transports guests directly into the fantastical world of Dr. Seuss! The walls of the museums feature murals from Dr. Seuss books, making the larger-than-life characters actually larger than life.
Upstairs, visitors will be able to find out more about the man behind the pen name, Theodor Geisel. Recreations of his studio and sitting room (including his drawing board, breakfast table, sofa, and armchair) gives you he chance to see how the famous author lived and worked.
After viewing a display of Geisel’s own zany hat and bowtie collection, you’ll have no trouble seeing the inspiration behind the famous character, The Cat in the Hat. The memorabilia will also feature original oil paintings, rare family photos, and home videos.
The museum will be open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 am to 5 pm and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm. Admission to The Amazing World of Doctor Seuss costs $25 for adults and $13 for children.
