Explore the World’s Largest Floating Museum in Gothenburg
Visiting a museum is a great way to learn more about the history and culture of a place that you’re visiting. The only thing better than a museum is an unconventional one. Behold Maritiman, Gothenburg and the world’s largest floating museum.
A museum all about boats
Maritiman is a museum collection of 13 water vessels from Sweden’s military that include a wide variety of boats, such as destroyers, U-boats, and fireboats. All of these boats vary in history, but what binds these boats together is that they all tell the story of what life was like on the sea. The vessels that you see here have been used for military and civilian purposes and have been preserved to the point where you can run, jump, and climb all over them.
Is there a future scientist in the midst? Maritiman boasts Tim’s Ocean Lab that allows children of all ages to get the opportunity to learn about the sea, life at sea, and how we can protect marine environment. A Party? Maritiman has got you covered with their Towboat Hercules that was built in 1939, which you can rent out. Hungry? Take a lunch break and enjoy hamburgers, salad wraps, and more at Matrosen, which serves as the restaurant and gift shop.
The point is there are tons of things that you can do when visiting Maritiman. There is a daily schedule available on the website that shows the list of activities happening throughout the day. Fortunately, it is specified whether or not certain activities will be in English or in Swedish, so be sure to check that out before starting a guided tour or a specific activity.
Numbers, figures and times – oh my!
The dates and times vary for when Maritiman is open, but they are typically open from 10.00-18.00 during the summer months and 11.00-16.00 during the spring and fall months. It is recommended you check the website before planning your trip.
Ticket prices start at 70 sek ($7.69) for children ages 5-15, 100 sek ($10.99) for students and seniors, and 125 sek ($13.73) for adults. Additionally, there is a family ticket that includes the admission of two adults and two children for 350 sek ($38.45) and you can add an additional child for 50 sek ($5.49). During the summer months, prices tend to rise about 10-45 sek depending on the ticket.
Maritiman is located at Packhusplatsen 12, 411 13 Gothenburg. For questions, they can be reached at +46 031-10 59 50 or at info@maritiman.se. To book an event, email bokning@maritiman.se.
