Sozopol is an increasingly popular Bulgarian Black Sea town, and it’s easy to see why. The town centre is charming and quiet — a refreshing difference from the party scene elsewhere on the seashore — and the beach is dotted with bars and cafes. Bobbing boats bring in fresh seafood and wooden houses line the Old Town cobblestone streets. Here’s our pick for the best places to stay in Sozopol.

Technically, Hotel More is pronounced ‘mor-eh’, the Bulgarian word for sea. But its name also fits with its English definition. From the plant-filled outdoor cafe to the wood-panelled sauna, the hotel packs amenities of larger complexes into a compact building within walking distance of the old town and beach. Fancy renting a car to explore the coastline? Front desk will help.

Just outside of Sozopol and right on the water, you can settle into one of Santa Marina’s villas. In addition to the resort’s multiple pools, restaurants, and tennis courts, it’s also home to more than 330 local and exotic trees, giving a leafy feel to the surroundings. Head to Nostalgie’s bakery for the best cakes around. There’s also an indoor playground with childcare attendants, ready to entertain kids up to 12 years old.

At Blue Bay, even the fitness centre pulls off a calming aesthetic. The hotel’s airy neutral rooms with wood and stone accents open up to a garden or Sozopol’s yacht port and include a bathrobe for maximum lounging in the sea breeze. When you decide to head out, the hotel is close to the central beach, main square, and outdoor amphitheatre.

Named for a nearby hill, it’s just steps from Harmanite Beach, Sozopol’s longest and widest public beach, and a 15-minute walk into the Old Town. Rinse off from a day on the sand in the luxurious rain showers or enjoy the two onsite pools, one for kids and one for adults.
