A rainy day in Malibu isn’t a complete loss. From art galleries to cozy dinner spots, the city has plenty of relaxing indoor activities to entertain when the California sun fails to shine.

From a morning workout to an evening glass of wine, this is your step-by-step guide of how to spend a soggy day in Malibu.

Morning

Start the day off with a hearty breakfast at the farm-to-table bistro Ollo Malibu, a cozy spot offering a range of comforting recipes. The heated patio is covered so that visitors can enjoy it whether it’s sunny or rainy. The McCeans Irish oatmeal with roasted hemp, goji berries, banana and almond milk makes for a particularly warming choice on a dreary day.

Afternoon

Keep your spirits lifted by booking an appointment to view the Wall Street Gallery. This pop-up art gallery is home to contemporary street artist Thierry Guetta, a.k.a. “Mr. Brainwash,” who made a name for himself as a protegé of the celebrated street artist Banksy. The vibrant colors and creative atmosphere will brighten up the otherwise drab afternoon.

A relaxing lunch at the Marmalade Cafe will round out your midday. Try one of the many house-made soups coupled with a sandwich of your choice and salad, or have the Free Range Chicken Pot Pie for something a bit more substantial. The inviting atmosphere makes it the ultimate lunch spot in which to linger. No need to run back out into that rain.

Be sure to carry an umbrella and stay dry

Evening

If the rain persists into the evening, make reservations for dinner at Gravina Malibu. This family-owned Italian eatery serves all of your favorite Italian dishes in an intimate and warm setting. The risotto with wild mushrooms and white truffle-infused oil is one delectable, satisfying meal. With great food and a friendly staff committed to offering an authentic Italian dining experience, it is easy to get lost in conversation and forget about the wet weather outside.

Finish the day tasting award-winning wines created by Malibu boutique vintners at Sip Malibu Grapes. Pair a glass of red wine with a gourmet cheeseboard to share, and select from a variety of challenging trivia games to pass the time. The rustic wood interior and dimly lit atmosphere is an ideal setting for whiling the night away.
