DeNunzio’s Italian Restaurant

This Italian favorite opened in 1997, but owner Ron DeNunzio has been serving his excellent pizza around Pennsylvania for more than 30 years. This restaurant, one of DeNunzio’s three, has private banquet facilities and can provide take-out service. Filled with Italian-inspired decor, the restaurant walks the line between classy and casual, making it a great place for all kinds of occasions, from a family dinner to a date night. The menu features many options including chicken, steak, seafood, pasta, salads, and pizzas.

At Udipi Café you’ll find one of the new favorites in Pennsylvania; dosai, flat pancake-like dishes originating from Southern India. Topped with chutney or served rolled up with veggies are two of the ways this versatile dish can be prepared. Manjunath Sherigar opened this restaurant in 1996 near Sri Venkateswara Temple, North America’s oldest major Hindu shrine. The restaurant is a favorite among locals, but especially with the vegetarian crowd. The cuisine is authentic and full of flavors and spices. Try the masala dosai—dosai filled with potatoes and onions—or the bisi bele bhath, rice cooked with lentils and garden fresh vegetables. Don’t miss the homemade desserts, like the rasmalai, homemade cottage cheese in special condensed milk flavored with rose water and garnished with pistachios.

Carhops Sub Shop

Carhops is the proud home of the two foot-long cheese steak. You read that right. The extensive menu includes different varieties of cheese steaks, reubens, burgers (called ‘Lamburghinis’ on the menu), Italian subs, and more. All subs are available in two sizes; a Coupe, which is one foot long or a Sedan, which is two feet. Try the traditional favorite, the cheese steak, which comes in simple varieties of just steak, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion (the Deville), to the more complex topped with steak, provolone and American cheese, bacon, and grilled mushrooms (the GTO).

Gateway Grill

Gateway Grill serves American favorites like barbecue, burgers, pizzas, Mexican, Italian, and more. Start with an order of nachos supreme, a mound of nachos topped with chili, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, black olives, jalapeno peppers, salsa, and sour cream. For your entrée, try the tender, perfectly seasoned ribs, which customers say falls right off the bone or a juicy, fresh-ground burger made from Angus sirloin beef and cooked in an open pit wood-fired grill. The biggest challenge will be choosing just one dish, and then picking out one of the 30 beers on tap to enjoy alongside it.

Primanti Brothers

A trip this close into Pittsburgh without visiting Primanti Brothers would be a huge mistake. Luckily there is a location right in Monroeville serving up these legendary sandwiches. What started as a sandwich cart catered to hungry truckers turned into a Pittsburgh favorite with 17 locations around the city and even more beyond. The signature sandwich comes in a variety of styles but each one is topped with coleslaw and crispy French fries and served on soft Italian bread. The delicious combination has proved a hit in the local community, and if you haven’t tried one yet this should be your first stop.

Tai Pei-Tokyo Restaurant Inc.

Located in a small strip-mall shop, this Asian restaurant doesn’t stand out much at a first glance, but once you taste the food you’ll understand why it’s a hugely popular restaurant in the area. The menu has familiar Chinese favorites alongside unique dishes and sushi options. From the chef’s specials section, try the seafood Mongolian, made with jumbo shrimp, scallops, lobster meat, mushrooms, snow peas, and onions served on a bed of hot egg noodles, or the Ou Shee Pie Goo, pork ribs marinated with ginger and garlic, cooked until tender, and served on a bed of Chinese seasonal greens.

Dad’s Pub & Grub

This family-friendly restaurant serves a variety of pub favorites and ‘Dad’s homemade American eats’ alongside an extensive beer collection including 40 on draft and even more in bottles. Open for lunch and dinner, you’ll find dishes like Dad’s Award-Winning Chili, Mom’s Homemade Wedding Soup, and the Big ‘E’ Burger topped with Cajun seasonings, peppers, and hot pepper cheese. The menu also features hot dogs, sandwiches, chicken wings, pizza, pizza rolls, and more. Start with one of ‘Dad’s Snacks’ like zucchini planks, strips of fresh zucchini breaded and topped with parmesan cheese, or pub chips, crispy homemade potato chips served with ranch dressing and a choice of seasonings.

Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza

Anthony’s has several locations around the United States, but it debuted in Southern Florida in 1982. Each pizza is cooked in an 800-degree oven to give it the Anthony’s trademark ‘well done’ flavor, and it only takes four minutes to cook. The pizza dough is made fresh every day and shaped to-order. The menu also includes coal-oven-roasted chicken wings, huge secret recipe meatballs, fresh Italian salads, and more. Try one of the traditional pizza pies made with fresh mozzarella, Italian plum tomatoes, romano cheese, basil, and olive oil, and choose from a variety of tasty toppings.

Gia Visto

This elegant restaurant serves excellent Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner. The name Gia Visto translates to déjà vu, because the owners want you to feel a sense of familiarity when you walk inside their restaurant. The menu isn’t huge, favoring quality over quantity, and it is BYOB, so bring along your favorite wine or other alcoholic beverages to enjoy with the food. For lunch, try a delicious salad like the kale and faro salad made with beets, citrus, dried cherries, goat’s cheese, and mustard vinaigrette or the supremely fresh shrimp Caprese salad made with sautéed shrimp, roasted Roma tomatoes, a spring greens mix, fresh mozzarella, olives, and balsamic and pesto vinaigrette. For dinner, try a specialty pasta like the squid ink linguini with calamari, garlic, herbs, EVOO, and bottarga or an entrée like the braised veal short ribs or Skuna Bay salmon.
