Must-Visit Waterfalls in Quebec
Think of Canadian waterfalls and Niagara Falls springs to mind. But there are other equally impressive falls worth a visit. Our local insiders share their favorite spots.
Chute de la Rivière aux Émeraudes
Natural Feature
In the verdant region of Coin-du-Banc you’ll find the Portage River, known by locals simply as Emeralds. One look at the river and it’s easy to see how it got its nickname, as the stones at the bottom make the river appear green. Here you’ll find over 17mi (27km) of L’Anse-à-Beaufils woodland trails. Visiting the falls is a must, and if you’re brave, you can even go for an ice-cold dip. While the water is freezing cold, on a hot summer’s day it might just be the refreshing relief you’re looking for. Recommended by local insider Caitlin Stall-Paquet
Parc des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière
Park
One of the most popular attractions in Quebec, Chutes-de-la-Chaudière is a spectacular 115ft (35m)-high waterfall. Build up your courage and take a walk along the 370ft(113m) suspension bridge over the Chaudière River, where you’ll be rewarded with exhilarating views (and refreshing sprays) of the falls. Enjoy a full day of leisure hikes on the easy 2.8mi (4.5km) of trails, or bike along the river. There is also a play area for kids and a picnic spot where you can enjoy lunch. It’s the perfect way to spend a warm, sunny day in Quebec. Recommended by local insider Caitlin Stall-Paquet
La Chute-du-Ruisseau-Blanc
Natural Feature
Are you ready for an outdoor adventure? Then pack your hiking gear and head to the Hautes-Gorges-de-la-Rivière-Malbaie National Park, with spectacular mountain scenery and impressive falls. Lovers of hilly views should put this national park on their to-do list, especially the Chute-du-Ruisseau-Blanc trail. This is the perfect 0.75mi (1.2km) hike (or bike ride) along the foot of the 148ft (45m)-high falls, where you’ll also discover incredible local wildlife including falcons and caribou. Montmorency Falls
Natural Feature
Just 7mi (12km) north of Quebec City, Montmorency Falls impresses visitors with its dramatic natural landscape. Here, you’ll find sublime waterfalls, which, at 272ft (83m), are nearly 100ft (30m) taller than the Niagara Falls. Experience this geological wonder dating back to the Paleozoic era while hiking the peaceful trails or taking a cable car to the top of the falls. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, you can try your hand at rock climbing or the 985ft (300m) double zipline across the falls. Recommended by local insider Tess Boissonneault
Parc Régional de la Rivière-du-Nord
Park
Summer fun awaits at the Parc Régional de la Rivière-du-Nord, the perfect day trip from Montreal. Transport yourself from the city into an exciting natural landscape in under an hour. The park is known for its gorgeous waterfall and rapids, which are accessible via 19mi (30km) of waterside walking trails, but it also offers water games for the kids, a sensory trail and obstacle course, and canoeing and kayaking. In the winter, the park is open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Recommended by local insider Tess Boissonneault
