As the name might suggest, Old Montreal is the oldest area in Montreal, Quebec. It is located in the borough of Ville-Marie and is a major tourist attraction, with many of the buildings dating to the 17th century. Here we list our favorite places to enjoy a drink in this must-see locale.

Méchant Boeuf

Restaurant, American, Canadian, Vegetarian

As they state on their website, ‘Méchant Boeuf delivers on all fronts’; they offer AAA Angus Beef, which is 100 per cent Canadian beef, a delicious raw bar, colorful cocktails, live music and ‘the best burger in town’. Méchant Boeuf has a modern pub vibe and, despite it’s name, isn’t ‘nasty’ at all. With a great menu, lovely staff, and a good selection of drinks, there’s not much not to dislike.

Modavie

Bar, Restaurant, French

Modavie is a great spot to have a drink and catch some live jazz as they host local bands seven nights a week. They also have a restaurant, so you enjoy some fish, beef, or lamb whilst you enjoy one of their many wines. The bar was founded in 1997, so it is relatively new and has a beautiful interior, decorated with a part-mosaic floor and visible pipes. Make a booking on weekends to avoid disappointment.

In the heart of Old Montreal lies Philémon Bar, a low key and trendy bar crammed with a young crowd. The bar has the feel of an old converted warehouse or factory, featuring industrial metallics and low lighting. Whilst drinking your dirty martini or mojito, enjoy house and hip-hop from the DJ spinning in the corner.

Pub St-Paul

Pub, Canadian

Pub St-Paul is situated in one of Montreal’s most historic buildings and has a lovely view of the waterfront. It is a great place for parties and events since it has seating for 400 people and a semi-private room with more than 150 seats. Pub St-Paul also hosts regular music nights so it is worth looking online to see who will be playing on whichever night you choose to go.

Joverse

Restaurant, Asian, American

Joverse is a Latin-Californian inspired bar, serving a variety of culinary delicacies and a huge range of cocktails, all of which are continually renewed and fine-tuned by their mixologists. The bar itself has a warm and refined industrial look. It is well-lit from the outside so you won’t miss it upon passing by.

Santos

Bar, Restaurant, Contemporary, Spanish, Tapas

Santos is a bar with an industrial vibe but has an added rustic twist. The bar is famous for its delicious tapas and has a Latin American feel. Regular customers are the creatives, or rather, the chic crowd of Old Montreal. Drinks are served in mason jars and there’s an array of intriguing art plastering the walls.

L'Appartement

Restaurant, Canadian

L’Appartement is a very busy restaurant known for its outstanding service and delicious food. What makes L’Appartement a great venue to enjoy a drink in is the music. As is suggested by their logo, where the dinner plate has been replaced by a pair of headphones, L’Appartement enjoy playing music, with the volume steadily increasing from 9pm onwards.

Taverne Gaspar

Restaurant, French, Pub Grub

Taverne Gaspar is located in a 19th century warehouse, in which much of the old-school furnishings are preserved. In the summer, they open their large terrace on rue de la Commune and it is a great spot to view the fireworks. They have a good menu and the prices are extremely reasonable compared to some of the surrounding bars.

La Champagnerie

At La Champagnerie the champagne is sold by the glass, or bottle, and the selection is changed every month. The restaurant has an industrial theme with exposed brick walls and metal fixtures throughout. For a spot outside in the beautiful terrace, book early to avoid disappointment.
