Mount Faber Park
Mount Faber is not a mountain as its name cheekily suggests. It’s an idyllic lovers’ hangout standing at 105-metres tall, overlooking the Telok Blangah area of Singapore. You’ll find quite a few cars on make-out duty parked here under the cover of the night, the owners enjoying a little hanky-panky within. It is also the place to see HDB flats (public housing in Singapore) under the hill light up one by one as night falls and the cityscape twinkles to life at your feet. Rememeber the scene from La La Land where Ryan Gosling danced to ‘City of Stars’ with Emma Stone? Who knows, a night at the top of Mount Faber might be the start of something wonderful and new.
Marina Barrage
You will never guess that such an expanse of greenery in land-scarce Singapore could be so magical. Marina Barrage is a dam built across the Marina Channel between Marina East and South, supplying water to Singaporeans and alleviating floods. That’s the functional part; the romantic aspect of it is an endless stretch of grass right at the very top, where people lay out their mats for picnics and kites drift happily in the blue sky. This is the place to kick back and just enjoy being by your date’s side. Bonus: this place gives you all the best views, including the Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay.
The Southern Ridges
The main attraction of the Southern Ridges is the handsome Henderson Bridge, but discovering the wonders of nature here is a definite highlight. The 10-kilometre nature trail connects parks between the Kent Ridge Park and Harbourfront along the southern ridge of Singapore. At the end of all that huffing and puffing up and downhill, you can relax at the 36-metres tall Henderson Bridge. At night, the structure glows softly from its shell-like ridges, which are perfect for you to hide away from inquisitive squirrels (and possibly humans) for an intimate moment.
Ann Siang Hill Park
Ann Siang Hill is a small hill, with a tiny but oh-so quaint and pretty park perched right at the top. It’s the perfect chill-out spot when you are tipsy from a drop too many at one of the bars on nearby Club Street. Just saunter away from the party revellers when that happens, and come here for a breather with your crush. Stroll along the winding paths and make a stop right at the very top – where you get a bird’s eye view of Chinatown’s colourful conservation shophouses. Many of these pre-war buildings were once the homes of Chinese clan associations, but now house some fancy restaurants and bars – perhaps one of which you just ducked out of. Don’t confuse this hill’s name with the one-way road in Chinatown.
Esplanade Bridge
Strolling along the Esplanade Bridge is a couple’s delight. The bridge starts from (or ends at – depending on which direction you come from) the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay and takes you to the Merlion on the other end. Even though the bridge is only 261 metres, many people take a while to make it to the end as they just stop mid-way to gawk at the picturesque view of Marina South and Marina Bay. Come dusk, the bridge is lit up and you can sit on one of the benches to watch the dancing lights on Marina Bay Sands Hotel in the distance, then head to elegant Fullerton Bay Hotel for a nightcap.
The Projector
Tucked away in Golden Mile Tower on Beach Road, The Projector was given a new lease of life when two cinema halls and the fifth floor foyer of Singapore’s historic Golden Theatre were refurbished. This independent cinema is the place for a cerebral date – or to snuggle up on beanbags as one of you (or both) tears over the bittersweetness of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The hipster-ish Intermission Bar on the fifth floor is where you can spend the night musing about how love could be.
Dempsey Hill
This former British army barracks now housing a selection of upscale stores and restaurants can be a tad atas (Singlish word for high-class) to some, but the beautiful black and white colonial bungalows here make it an unmissable spot for romance. The secluded area is infused with a tropical charm and an air of elegance, that you’ll want to wine and dine here on that one special evening. If you don’t want to overspend, this lush tropical oasis on the fringes of Orchard Road also makes for some lovely walks.
Lower Peirce Reservoir
Lower Peirce is not as famous as its buddy MacRitchie Reservoir located nearby, so all you get here is serenity and the best seats to a spectacular sunset. If you drag a chair here like the Little Prince does everyday on his planet, you will be rewarded with splendid sunsets with your cherished rose. The mature secondary rainforest surrounding the water – filled with trees estimated to be over a hundred years old, some 900 flowering plants, 100 ferns and 250 animal species – means you have the wilderness right at your disposal. No plucking flowers to put in your beau’s hair, though.
Changi Point Coastal Walk
Also known as the Changi Boardwalk, this 2.2-km scenic pathway along the Changi coastline warrants an early start in the day. Catch the sunrise with your date here and you can spend the rest of the day wandering around the area. Or venture out to sea on one of the bumboats and find an isolated shore to enjoy some quality time alone.
Night Safari
You’d think going to the zoo is a family outing with the kids, but with the Night Safari you can take it up a romantic notch. With the owls hooting, the cicadas singing, a friendly grunt here and a timid squeak there, this is the perfect place to hang out with your date. The animals aren’t going to intrude upon your kisses, (they need their romantic time, too), and everyone else will be too busy looking for the nocturnal animals rather than judging you two. Enjoy walking under the silver moonlight and let the animals bear witness to your love.
