With its farms and orchards, Vermont is quintessential New England. In fall, visitors travel from far and wide to spend a sunny day picking apples. Here’s a list of apple orchards to visit.

Shelburne Orchards

Market

Shelburne Orchards has been family-run for decades. Stop by anytime from September 1 through October to pick your own apples from over 6,000 apple trees. Visitors can also spend the afternoon trying donuts, apple or ginger ciders, and vinegars made on the farm. During the rest of the year, visitors can stop by for peaches and cherries, or to relax beside Lake Champlain.

Burtt's Apple Orchard

Market

Burtt’s Apple Orchard has nearly 40 varieties of apples to choose from. Pick up a bushel with an assortment to try out new kinds. In the summer months, visitors can also pick tart cherries, enjoy cider donuts, or buy fresh vinegar. Cabot Creamery is also nearby – it’s a perfect stop to purchase cheese that pairs well with freshly picked apples.

Adams Apple Orchard & Farm Market

Market

Adam Apple Orchard & Farm Market is open daily from May through December. During the summer, fresh produce is available for purchase and homegrown strawberries to enjoy. There’s apple picking and pumpkin picking and all the necessary fixings from fall through the holiday season.

Allenholm Farm & Apple Orchard

Market

This seven-generation apple orchard sits on an island in the middle of Lake Champlain. Allenholm Farm & Apple Orchard has 25 acres of apples and also fresh cherries, raspberries, and blueberries at the farm stand during the summer months. Stop by for fresh produce, homemade applesauce, and a cider slushy. Their Maple Creamee (soft serve ice cream) is also a favorite summer treat!

Scott Farm Orchard

Market

Scott Farm Orchard has over 125 varieties of heirloom apples so you can sample and enjoy the taste of new varieties. During the fall months, go out and pick your own apples, or attend events and workshops that are held throughout the entire season. Try a hard cider-making workshop or learn to make fruit pastries.

Chapin Orchard

Market

Pumpkins, apples, cider – Chapin Orchard has it all. Only 20 minutes from Burlington, it’s the perfect out-of-the-city pit stop. Pick several different varieties of apples, or go for the classic McIntosh which Chapin Orchard has the most of, to make delicious apple pies. In the farm shop, you can also purchase pumpkins and fresh apple cider. They make it on-site (visit on a Thursday and you can watch the whole process). Different apples are used for the cider at different points of the year, so check back to try out new varieties.

Boyer's Orchard & Cider Mill

Market

Boyer’s Orchard & Cider Mill has apples, pears, plums, and cherries available for picking. Try out their homemade wines (made from the 25 varieties of wine grapes grown on the property) and hard ciders. Don’t leave without checking out their Maple Sugar House. Their fresh maple syrup is also unparalleled, so be sure to bring a bottle home.
