The port city of Brest in Brittany isn’t exactly the Las Vegas of France, but its bars are some of the cosiest, serving up traditional Breton cider, among other regional drinks. There are also a handful of clubs if you want to take your night further – here are the best spots.

Greenwich Café

Bar, French

With fantastic views over the Château de Brest, Greenwich Café is a small and friendly tapas bar and cocktail lounge, serving up drinks and dancing every night until 2am. From the small terrace, diners and drinkers will also get a great view of the Tanguy Tower and the Recouvrance Bridge.

The Blind Piper

Bar, Irish

A traditional Irish pub, The Blind Piper is warm and welcoming, with a wide range of drinks on offer from beers and whiskies to regional ciders. Locals flock here for after work drinks and weekend get-togethers to play darts, board games and the like.

Tara Inn

Located next to the quayside at Brest harbour, Tara Inn is a real local pub in Brest and is a favourite among the younger crowd. Expect Irish music and drinks – along with French, of course – as well as traditional Breton and Irish dancing on certain nights, especially during Fest Noz nights (the traditional Breton night festival with dancing and traditional songs).

La Base Brest

Bar, French

Occupying an attractive spot on the Castle Marina, La Base Brest is a modern restaurant and bar with a maritime vibe. If you’re looking for somewhere where dinner can turn into drinks and last orders aren’t at 11pm, then this is the bar to head to. The menu is happily filled with seafood dishes, along with all the French classics, and drinks are reasonable, making it one of the most popular venues in town.

Les Fauvettes

Bar, French

Boasting the best beer selection in town – and readily on display behind the bar – Les Fauvettes is a popular, relaxed pub next to Brest’s Église Saint-Martin. It’s a bit of a nightlife institution in Brest, always brimming with students and people who’ve stopped by after work, so don’t be surprised if you have to fight to get a table.

Stendhal Brest

Nightclub, European

Nightclubs in France can often be found a little out of town, but Stendhal Brest is conveniently located in downtown Brest, just a short walk from the pubs and bars of the early evening. Open until dawn four days a week, this popular venue has been running since 1932 and hosts various themed nights throughout the year.

Looking for a disco spot in Brittany? Open until 4am on Saturdays and late most of the rest of the week, La Javanaise Bar rolls out all of the 1970s and 1980s hits. Always bustling – partly down to the size of the bijou bar – it’s a firm favourite for a cocktail and a twirl when out in Brest.
