You have not truly been to Uzhhorod if you have not tried the local specialities while there. For example, most of the eateries serve syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes), which is a very common dish for breakfast or brunch all over Ukraine. Meanwhile, kremzlyky (a Hutsul interpretation of potato pancakes) and hombovtsi (cottage cheese balls) are interesting local alternatives also worth trying. To make sure that you’ve tried the best of everything Western Ukraine has to offer, check out the list of the spots below.

Muffin Café

Cafe, European

If you prefer to have a light breakfast in the morning, Muffin Café is the right spot for you. As the name suggests, it specializes in muffins and coffee. That being said, you can also find other sweet dishes perfect for breakfast or brunch like a scrumptious piece of cake with a scoop of ice cream, chia pudding in coconut milk with strawberries and banana, fresh fruit and granola. In addition, the homely atmosphere of Muffin Café provides for a pleasant ambience even at 8am.

Fabbrica Drugetti

Restaurant, Italian, American

Fabbrica Drugetti is one of the locals’ favourite spots. It always has fresh pastries and serves extremely delicious food, so people come to the restaurant for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. In the morning, you can get an amazing variety of freshly baked goods from the neighbouring La Bouchée bakery and a pot of tea or coffee. Meanwhile, the signature dish is kremzlyky (a Hutsul interpretation of potato pancakes), which is a must-try when in Western Ukraine.

Folks

Patisserie, Dessert Shop, European, French

Folks is the only pâtisserie in Uzhhorod and a favourite spot for sweet tooths. So, forget your diet for the day and plan a visit to this dessert shop. Such an abundance of pies and cakes will make your breakfast the tastiest meal of the day. Caramel and lemon, white chocolate and hazelnuts tarts, light cheesecakes or rich chocolate noisette cake perfectly fit with morning tea or coffee. A glass of Champagne during Sunday brunch can be complemented with a gourmet cheese plate.

Old Continent

Hotel Restaurant, Restaurant, European

The Old Continent restaurant offers dishes drawn from European and Ukrainian cuisine, prepared exclusively from high-quality ingredients. There are a couple of dining rooms and a beautiful outdoor area, decorated with exotic plants, a cascading waterfall and a fountain. Here, you can have your breakfast or brunch out in the fresh air, leisurely drinking aromatic coffee. Such a pleasant meal will make the day not only productive but also delightful.

Caffeine

Cafe, Coffee Shop, European

Ukrainians are addicted to morning coffee rituals, therefore most of the coffee shops have breakfast options. At Caffeine, they don’t serve any food, but the variety of drinks is really impressive. There are milkshakes, coffee drinks with different toppings and fruit and vegetable smoothies for those who are into a healthy lifestyle. So, if you’ve been jogging and would like to get a dose of vitamins, pop into Caffeine for a morning drink.

Shtefanyo

Cafe, Dessert Shop, European, French

Shtefanyo is an arty dessert shop in central Uzhhorod. The concept of the venue centres around the chef’s homemade confectionery and pastries. The signature item here is a cake called Uzhhorod, cooked without flour. Other specialities include a variety of classic French cakes, and their macarons are also popular among locals. Entering Shtefanyo, you will find a traditional Parisian dessert shop, with beautiful shop windows and dizzying aroma of freshly cooked goods.

Eat Me! Café

Cafe, American

Eat Me! Café is one of the most popular places to visit in Uzhhorod. It serves American cuisine, so if you’re craving something hearty and nourishing in the morning, you should definitely stop by. There is a huge variety of waffles and club sandwiches, as well as separate breakfast options like an omelette with sausages, eggs and bacon, or an avocado and egg scramble. In addition to American food, Eat Me! Café also offers an unusual interpretation of Ukrainian syrniki (cottage cheese pancakes) with herbs and smetana (sour cream).

Astika

Cafe, Pizzeria, European

Astika is a pizzeria that serves European and Italian cuisine and also some local specialities. Special attention should be paid to the separate section with breakfast combos. Galician dishes like tokan (well-smoked corn grits, salt and water) with cheese and hombovtsi (small cottage cheese balls) with prunes are unique regional delicacies, not so popular in other parts of Ukraine. Syrniki with raisins, on the other hand, are as common as eggs and bacon. You can also, of course, order classic pancakes, an omelette or fried eggs at Astika.

Trattoria Twins

Cafe, Pizzeria, European, Italian

Trattoria Twins is a café that features Italian cuisine, with classic items like pizza, pasta, salads, snacks and desserts, which can be taken away or ordered for a special event. But there’s also a limited breakfast menu with four options, which you will like for sure. These are thin Ukrainian pancakes, fried eggs with toast, omelette with basil and classic syrniki with jam and sour cream. Whether in the morning or later in the day, Trattoria Twins is the ultimate destination for breakfast or brunch in Uzhhorod.
