The Best Cafes in Asuncion, Paraguay
Café culture is in its infancy in Paraguay as much of the country lacks the money to enjoy such leisurely pursuits, and homebrewed maté still reigns supreme. In recent years, however, a number of trendy locales have begun to pop up, particularly in the more affluent areas of Asuncion. Here are the best places to grab your daily caffeine fix in the city.
El Café de Acá
Cafe, Contemporary, South American
Perhaps Asuncion’s most beloved coffeehouse, El Cafe de Aca is a must for its sizable leafy patio, fantastic coffee, and delicious desserts menu. Conveniently located right in the heart of the city, this rustic old-world locale is a popular spot for tourists to enjoy a cappuccino in between exploring the city’s sites. Better yet, drop in for their incredible Sunday brunch, a scrumptious and satisfying morning feast that has become legendary throughout the city.
La Herencia Tienda Café
Cafe, South American
One of the more endearing coffeehouses in Asuncion, this quirky café is packed full of creative artwork with a distinct vintage flair. It doesn’t take long to see why it has become a favorite among Asuncion’s bohemian youth who chow down on mouthwatering international and local delicacies in between endless cups of top quality brew. Be sure to check out their attached gourmet delicatessen and greengrocer to grab some tasty grub for that next overnight bus ride.
Café Martínez
Cafe, South American
Born out of Buenos Aires back in the 30s, this popular franchise has recently been taking South America by storm. Both Asuncion branches are excellent and, more importantly, continue a strong tradition of serving up some of the best damn cheesecake in South America (try the passionfruit). Of course, their coffee is on point as well.
Juan Valdez Cafe
Cafe, Contemporary
Okay, so it may not be the most traditional café in Asuncion, but Colombians know their coffee and the flagship Starbucks-inspired chain known as Juan Valdez is certainly no exception. There are two locations in the city, with the biggest and most impressive situated in Paseo Villa Alegra, an upmarket outdoor shopping center which provides a fascinating insight into how the wealthier echelons of Paraguayan society live.
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
Cafe, Contemporary
Another international chain to make headway into Asuncion, the Californian based Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf have brought their passion for quality brew into the country with gusto. As the name suggests, tea and coffee are the primary focus here, mostly thanks to a selection of quality leaves and the best beans from South America and beyond. Of course, plenty of tasty sweet and savory snacks adorn the menu as well, including panini, fresh bagels, and black forest cake.
La Vienesa
Cafe, South American
A favorite Paraguayan sweet tooth franchise, this popular Viennese bakery has several locations throughout the city with their Plaza de la Democracia branch being the most convenient for travelers. As you would expect, cakes and desserts are the big highlights here, each as sugary and delicious as the next. Those after something a bit more substantial can order any one of their filling mains. Just be aware that service can be slow at times.
Medialunas Calentitas
Bakery, Cafe, Contemporary
Piping hot, freshly baked croissants full of soft melted cheese are the star attraction here, as Spanish speakers might have inferred from the name. And while they are undoubtedly delicious, there are also plenty of other worthwhile options on the menu including an array of pastries, tarts, empanadas, and even thin crust pizza. Granted, the coffee may not be as good as other options on this list. But with so many delicious baked goods to sample, who are we to complain?
