If movies like The Fast and the Furious (parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…I’ve lost count) are a tad too predictable for the serious cinema connoisseur that you are, don’t fret. The Magic City has its share of cinemas to catch all the foreign and independent films you want to see.

Coral Gables Art Cinema

Perched right across from the independent bookstore of Books & Books, the Coral Gables Art Cinema features Oscar-nominated flicks such as Phantom Thread, and foreign films and documentaries all in one cozy theater. On Saturdays after 11:30 p.m., the cinema presents ‘After Hours’ cult classics for $8 with a free popcorn included. There’s multi-level parking at the parking garage next door, just don’t forget to validate your parking after the movie is over.

O Cinema – Wynwood

O Cinema in Wynwood is located adjacent to Wynwood Yard, but you may not have recognized it. The cinema is decorated in graffiti art and passes for any other warehouse in the artsy neighborhood – except it’s not. The independent cinema screens foreign films and retro movies. It also has a sister venue in Miami Beach.

The Cinematheque in Miami Beach is extra special – it’s housed in the historic city hall. Boasting an elegant exterior façade with Romanesque columns and a classy interior with red seats, movie night is upgraded. The space also includes a bookstore and a café and is home to the Miami Beach Film Society.

Located within the University of Miami in Coral Gables, this campus theater runs special programs throughout the summer. You can catch 35mm classics such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and new releases including Claire’s Camera. Students can even watch for free.

Tower Theatre

Miami Dade College’s Tower Theatre first opened as a silent movie theater in 1926.The historic cinema right on 8th street in Little Havana, features foreign film screenings as well as lectures. It’s also next to popular tourist sites such as Domino Park and right across from Ball & Chain where you can swing by for drinks afterward.

Olympia Theater

It may be first and foremost a center for the performing arts, but this historic downtown venue also doubles as a cinema occasionally. Dating back to 1926, the Olympia (or Gusman Center) is famous for its art deco architecture. Educational tours of the building are offered during the day.
