The Best Day Trips From Cairo
When planning a trip to Egypt, there are always plenty of tours available in the capital city. However, Egypt is not just about Cairo; in fact, it has more to see outside of its capital. Escaping the city’s hustle and bustle is easy because Egypt has some of the best weekend getaways from Cairo. And if you don’t have the time to take an additional trip, there are loads of day trips that will also do the job. Here are the best day trips from Cairo for the ultimate city break.
Go fishing in Ain Al Sokhna
Just about an hour and a half drive away from Cairo, Ain Al Sokhna is one of Egypt’s most relaxing destinations. Its steady smooth sea, soft sandy beach, huge mountains overlooking the water and quaint atmosphere provide tranquillity and serenity. Add on to that view a one of a kind fishing trip in the middle of the Red Sea. There are plenty of boats you can rent when you arrive at the harbour, where a captain takes you in the middle of the sea to enjoy fishing inside. Whether you’re with your family or friends, rest assured that you’ll have an amazing time.
Discover Memphis, Saqqara and Dahshur
Enjoy sandboarding in Fayoum
Located 90 kilometres from the capital city, Fayoum is one of Egypt’s many oases and the nearest to Cairo. While visitors flee to Fayoum for many reasons, including ancient monuments, Wadi Al Rayan’s waterfalls, Magic Lake and Lake Qaroun, Fayoum is mostly famous for its beautiful and wide sand dunes. Visitors can partake in sandboarding on these sand dunes while enjoying the surreal view of Magic Lake as they sandboard and land at its feet.

Eat delicious fish in Ismailia
Situated on the west bank of the Suez Canal, the city of Ismailia is just a short distance from Cairo. As the city lies by the Suez Canal, Cairo residents pour to Ismailia for its incredibly delicious fish. As you walk by its promenade, many restaurants line up placing piles of fish on display to choose from. Not only is the fish fresh as it is straight from the sea, but it is much cheaper than in the capital. The city of Ismailia is also home to the prominent Ismailia Museum, which has over 4,000 antiques that date back to the Pharaonic and Greco-Roman times.
Ride a jet ski in Fayed
At around 106 kilometres away from Cairo, Fayed is a small town situated on the banks of Bitter Lake between Ismailia and Suez. It is mostly known as a resort area surrounded by beaches and palm trees. It also features many vacation homes and hotels, where residents and tourists can relax due to its proximity to Cairo. The resort doesn’t have much to do, therefore, water sports are a hit here. Rent a jet ski and enjoy the beach with its impressive views of palm trees standing tall in the sky.
Tour the city of Alexandria
Considered the second-largest city in Egypt, Alexandria is one of the most beautiful and most visited cities in Egypt, after Cairo. A day trip won’t do Alexandria justice, however, it’s a must visit even if it’s for the day. Therefore, focus on the main sights while you’re there, such as Pompey’s Pillar, Montazah Palace, the new Library of Alexandria, the Citadel of Qaitbay and the Pharaonic Anfushi. Finally, enjoy a stroll down its promenade on the famous Mediterranean Sea, where you can find many seafood restaurants that will tantalize your taste buds.
