The Best Healthy Restaurants in Mexico City
While Mexico City is definitely a place that can derail your diet with spicy tacos, heavenly cocktails, and rich sauces, the city has a lighter, healthier side, too. For vegetarian visitors or anyone just looking to eat clean and fresh for the day, there are plenty of healthy and delicious options for a quick meal or a leisurely comida. Many of the restaurants below even offer detox meal programs delivered right to your door.
7 Buddhas Healthy Bar
Cafe, Healthy
Conveniently located next to a yoga studio, 7 Buddhas has scrumptious healthy breakfasts such as smoothie bowls and wholewheat waffles with fruit and honey. The coffee is quite good and the juices and smoothies are fresh. The wooden utensils are a little odd-feeling on the tongue, but delightfully rustic. The café sits on a quiet street between the beautiful neighborhoods of Roma and Condesa, and so makes for a pleasant morning of gazing at blossoms and people watching.
Básico
Restaurant, Healthy
A restaurant committed to making both you and the planet healthier, Basico has vegetable-focused variety. Some of their more interesting items include a black lemonade with active carbon, juice “shots” for a fast infusion of vitamins and minerals, and bowls like salmon with mint or poke-style tuna. They are located right off of Lincoln Park in Polanco among the handful of streets that make up Polanco’s most bustling restaurant zone.
Centro Macrobiotico Tao
Restaurant, Contemporary
If there is a winner for most astute on this list, the Macrobiotic Center takes the prize. The menu is based on the macrobiotic concept of balancing your nutritional ying and yang and eating mostly local fruits, vegetables, and grains with a little soy or fish protein thrown in. The food at this restaurant is refreshingly great, with almost no condiments and no processed products. They also have a small store in the same location for clean eating at home.
Ojo de Agua
Restaurant, Healthy
This restaurant chain is an extension of the Ojo de Agua organic stores. The small cafés serve innovative dishes from a range of international cuisines, all as healthy and as organic as possible. They have an expansive menu including a few standouts like the Guanabana-Deli and the roast beef with plum sauce. The location in Condesa faces a pleasant little roundabout in the heart of the neighborhood, a great place to relax and sip some recovery juices and smoothies.
Flor de Viento
Restaurant, Healthy
The Flor de Viento menu satisfies all kind of healthy eaters, from vegan to carnivorous. All on the same page, you’ll find gluten-free pancakes, salmon wraps, tuna steak burgers, buddha bowls, cold-pressed juices and more—all 100% organic. They also offer a detox program from three to seven days that includes personalized attention from one of their specialists and home delivery of your menus. If you’re short on time, they have a to-go section for something fresh on the run.
Mora Mora
Restaurant, Healthy
Mora Mora is serious about clean eating, offering detox programs with juices and menu items that you can pick up or have delivered for as many days as you want to revitalize. In house, they offer smoothies, bowls, toasts, and sandwiches, all dairy- and meat-free. Don’t worry, you can still have one vice—they served organic cold brew coffee with almond milk or solo. They are a truly unusual find in a city obsessed with tacos and cocktails.
Alma Pura
Restaurant, Healthy
One of the best new healthy spots in Mexico City’s hip Colonia Roma, Alma Pura proves that healthy is far from tasteless. The tuna and soy grilled veggie sandwich is phenomenal and the smoothies will keep you coming back over and over again. This small café is also a great place to linger and perhaps do some work, with wide open space and a long communal table. Be ready for some reggae, which is often on the playlist rotation.
Elihir Vegetariano
Restaurant, Healthy
Often times, visitors are concerned that being vegetarian means potentially missing out on some traditional Mexican dishes. At Elihir Vegetariano, you can have the full experience of a homestyle comida corrida, but in vegetarian form. Spinach “meatballs” in tomato sauce, cold fruit soups, and wheat milanesa are all on the rotating menu, which also includes a set meal option with a salad bar, entree, dessert, and lightly flavored fruit water for less than US$5.
