With beautiful beaches, great surf and ancient traditions, Peru‘s Huanchaco is fantastic little beach town just outside of Trujillo. A stop-off here means sea, sunshine and sand, as well as seeing fishermen surf into shore with their caballitos de totora, a tradition that pre-dates the Incas. Here’s our guide to the best hostels in town.

Frogs Chillhouse

Hostel

This large four-storey hostel is located a little bit further than you’d want from the main part of Huanchaco, but it more than makes up for that with its sheer size and amenities. There’s a ping pong, foosball, and pool table all on diffrerent floors of the hostel, and they offer guests a kitchen to use. There is a rooftop bar that is also a restaurant, so you can pair a pizza with your trujillo cerveza, which is one of their restaurant bar deals. When Chicama is firing you can take their VW bus to the world’s longest left.

Moksha Yoga & Surf Hostel

This place feels more like a community – a family, even – than a hostel. The owners, Coco and Gonzalo, are eager to help you out with any questions you may have, and the hostel hosts a lot of community events. On Thursdays and Sundays, it hosts a farmers market right outside its doors and also holds other important projects like animal adoptions and volunteer work. The hostel itself is very spacious and even offers guests yoga mats to do some morning or sunset yoga on their deck over looking the ocean. There is also a kitchen guests can use, though if you don’t want to cook, the hostel has a vegan/vegetarian restaurant. Moksha is located steps away from the ocean and from Huanchaco’s best surf spots.

Casa Fresh

Hostel

This hostel is located just steps away from the waves and all the best surf action in Huanchaco, which makes checking the waves each morning as easy as walking a few feet. If you don’t even feel like leaving the hostel grounds to check the waves, you can scope them from the patio overlooking the ocean. For those who want to practise their Spanish, the hostel offers a language school on site.

Huanchaco Hostal

This hostel is located outside of a little plaza, about two blocks from the beach. The accommodation is pleasant, as is the building. It’s a quaint spot, offering a pool, and is a good location for families.

La Gringa Hostel

Hostel

Just off the busiest part of Huanchaco, right across form the pier, this place always has its doors open and is an inviting bar to pop your head in. In the front there is a bar and plenty of place to hang out, including hammocks to lounge in. Great location, cheap room prices and surf rentals and lessons available.

This place might have the best view from a hammock, which are on a second storey patio, facing the ocean. The hostel is large and boasts a pool, bar, restaurant, and a ping pong and pool table. They offer traditional Peruvian food and offer a late breakfast. They also have a couple rooms with views of the ocean.

ATMA Hostel and Yoga

Hostel

This is a new hostel to the area and you can tell: it is very clean and very tidy, right down to the last detail. The hostel has a garden with rabbits and a tortoise hanging out, while you chill in a hammock. There’s a large living room and they have a yoga studio with an ocean view. This place is definitely worth checking out while in Huanchaco.
