The best-known of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has been tempting sunseekers for decades – and after hiking up Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, you’ll want to cool off. Tenerife has developed a pretty sophisticated hotel scene, catering for all bags and budgets. Of course, a resort is nothing without a fabulous pool to relax beside – and in – so we’ve scoured the island for the best hotels in which to take the plunge in style.

Oozing Med-style luxury down to its contemporary four-poster beds, this Costa Adeje beauty cocoons guests among lush palm trees and a complex of cooling pools. Between mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, you’ll swim with amazing views from the rooftop infinity pool – for extra-cool credit, book a Maldivian-style, over-water villa or a swim-up pool villa. Beach lovers can hit Playa de la Enramada, a giant charcoal-coloured stretch a five-minute drive away.

Two side-by-side turquoise pools command your attention, one for children, who adore the mini waterslide and fountains. To cool off further, summon a cocktail or ice lolly from the poolside bar. For foodies and fans of pampering, the chocolate body wraps at the spa are worth trying, along with pasta and paella at the restaurant – which has its own terrace. Whitewashed rooms with pops of red and balconies or terraces invite relaxation after days in the sun on Playa de las Américas.

Rooms are smart and whitewashed, brightened with Med-blue hues; some have sea views and balconies. The highlight for us is the beach club, a minute’s walk away on the Costa Adeje, with a saltwater pool, Bali beds and a sea-view restaurant for fresh catch of the day.

Check in for village-style living in the heart of Tenerife’s volcanic landscapes, where sea-view rooms with terraces are as stylish as they’re sustainable, with hot tubs on the terrace. The resort has a total of eight pools, so there’ll be no missing out on splash time. If you’re an active type you can paddleboard on the lake or explore the San Blas Environmental Reserve, next door.
