With artistic sensibilities and a flair for design – from food and fashion to architecture and decor -, Italians are widely regarded as trend-setters. Although Milan is known as Italy’s design capital – with the annual Salone del Mobile (furnishing and design festival) drawing crowds each year, Rome has a number of design stores that will surely appeal to interior designers and architects visiting the Eternal City.

You might miss Mia Home Design Gallery if you’re not looking carefully. Located on the artistic Via di Ripetta that departs from Piazza del Popolo, this interior design treasure trove is tucked behind two enormous wooden doors that partially obscure it from view, save for the illuminated “Mia” sign that beckons you to look within. Its three female founders wanted to create a dynamic space that combines contemporary and retro furniture, homewares and accessories and they’ve done a great job: the store is at once playful and refined, offering something for all styles and ages.

LAGO

Store

Just further down the street on Via di Ripetta lies LAGO, part of the global furniture and interior design empire that has its headquarters in the northern Veneto region. This innovative brand is a wonderful ambassador for Italian design, creating unique pieces and furniture for every room of your home or office. Sleek, modular and functional, the pieces are perfect for minimalists and anyone who appreciates simplicity in their home.

Magazzini Associati

Market, Shop

Magazzini Associati‘s showroom transmits a cozier vibe than many interior design stores. With a lived-in feel, you’re invited into a magical space with oversized sofas, mock fireplace and illuminated interior thanks to lamps of all shapes and sizes. The interior design shop prides itself on featuring famous brands alongside emerging talents, selected by owner Marianna Marini for their originality and high quality. It’s a true pleasure to peruse and you’re sure to find a trinket to take home with you (even if you aren’t in the market for a statement piece of furniture).

Atelier Monti

Across the street from Monti’s favourite local haunt Tre Scalini, Atelier Monti is a fabulous little architecture and design studio that sells a variety of furniture, plus custom-made kitchens and bathrooms. The objects here stand out for their colour and originality with a simplistic edge: wooden dressers, wire frame shelving units, sleek metal tables and more. Atelier Monti uses Italy’s signature style as a starting point and incorporates international influences into its designs and selections, making it a creative hub in the neighborhood.

Arcon is a furniture and interior design studio that has been outfitting homes and offices with Made in Italy brands and international names since 1956. Arcon stands for Arredamento Contemporaneo, or Contemporary Furnishings, so you’ll find plenty of innovative pieces here for a 21st century home, including Fornasetti‘s famous plates, lamps made from oversized bulbs, modular leather sofas with teal metal accents and funky mirrors superimposed with geometric designs.
