Paige Watts

Portland, the largest city in Maine, is a foodies’ metropolis full of great restaurants and sustainably sourced ingredients. Portland also has plenty of large decks, harbor views, and cozy private patios to choose from if you want to eat al fresco in summer. Here are our top picks.

The pub serves Irish favorites such as fish and chips, made from fresh local cod and Guinness beef stew. It also offers both local beers and Ireland’s favorite drafts. Brian Ború has live music every week from Thursday through Sunday with no cover charge.

Silly’s Restaurant

Restaurant, Diner, Gastropub, North American, Vegan, Vegetarian, Fast Food, Dessert

Silly’s Restaurant is a funky place serving sandwiches, burgers, and flatbread pizzas. The back garden patio and deck are just as lively, fun, and colorful as the restaurant’s name suggests. Everything is made at the restaurant, except the tortillas, and they have a designated gluten-free fryer and a designated vegan fryer.

The covered porch offers a view across the Casco Bay Bridge and into South Portland. Outliers serves a changing menu made from seasonal, fresh, and local products. Both the menu and the restaurant’s design aim to be sustainable; they are the only establishment in the state to use solar panels for hot water and electricity.

Timber Steakhouse & Rotisserie

Restaurant, American

Timber Steakhouse & Rotisserie serves only locally sourced, grass-fed Black Angus beef and local Maine seafood. Their outdoor space has plenty of tables with umbrellas to shade diners in the summer, a fire pit to keep guests warm in the fall and winter, and couches for lounging; the space is enclosed by a whiskey barrel privacy fence as well.
