In a place like Nashville, people should take any chance they get to spend time outdoors, and there’s no better way to get in a workout than by enjoying it outside in the fresh Tennessee air, among the scenic views. These are the best places to get an outdoor workout in the state’s capital.

Yoga in the Park

Every Tuesday evening from May 30 through September 5, 2017, free yoga classes take place at Centennial Park. The one-hour classes, taught by Kali Yuga Yoga instructors, start at 6 p.m. in the grassy area near the volleyball courts where Park Plaza and 31st Avenue meet. Yoga in the Park is a partnership program between Kali Yuga Yoga and Team Green Adventures, created by independent radio station Lightning 100 back in 1996.

Crutch Camp

Designed to tone muscles and burn calories, Crutch Camp is a four-week high-energy boot camp run by certified personal trainer Bill Crutchfield. The boot camp, which Bill founded in 2007, is structured to allow each participant to set their own pace and uses medicine balls, exercise bands, and plyometrics. In 1993, Bill became the first personal trainer in Nashville to go on tour with a traveling artist and has since worked with and trained many celebrities. In addition to teaching Crutch Camp, Bill works several days a week doing personal training and running sessions with clients who want a more intimate workout experience.

Harpeth Bicycle Club

Formed in 1997, the Harpeth Bicycle Club promotes cycling in the greater Nashville area. Cyclists ride year-round, but peak season is April through October when evening rides are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Scheduled rides are offered between two and five days a week, weather permitting. The length, difficulty, and speed of each ride vary in order to accommodate the range of riders who are members of the club. There are training clinics available that assist with safety skills, and most rides have a leader who ensures that no riders are left behind.

Street Workout Park

Gym, Park

Located near the Cumberland River by the Ascend Amphitheater is Nashville’s Street Workout Park. The outdoor gym is open to all outdoor fitness sports such as boot camps, CrossFit, bodyweight strength training, and Freeletics. The gym has low bars, parallel bars, pull-up bars, and incline benches.

Stand Up Paddleboarding

For people who love being on the water, Nashville Paddle Co. offers stand up paddleboarding (SUP) lessons on a waterfront boathouse at Percy Priest Lake. Offerings include how-to lessons, group paddles, PaddleFit, SUP yoga, and YOLO board. A portion of all proceeds goes to the Cumberland River Compact, which protects local waterways. Nashville Paddle Co. specializes in assisting people who want to get out on the water but don’t own or have access to a paddleboard.

Outdoor Rock Climbing

Nashville’s primary indoor rock climbing facility is Climb Nashville. The venue also offers yoga and other fitness activities and does personal guided outdoor climbing trips, for up to 12 participants, that take place outside of Nashville. One option is Foster Falls, which is a scenic hiking destination near Tracy City, and the other is Kings Bluff, located near Clarksville along the Cumberland River. AMGA-certified guides lead these two outdoor adventures, taking climbers across streams, through the woods, and in between sandstone rocks and climbing areas.
