Miami’s Puerto Rican population was relatively small compared to other notable Latin American communities. However, since the devastation incurred on the small island by Hurricane Irma in the fall of 2017, the 3-0-5 has been receiving a high number of Puerto Ricans. So while the newest migrant population to the “Capital of Latin America” settles into its new quarters, here’s our guide to a few of the typical Puerto Rican restaurants serving up Borinquen cuisine in the city.

Isla Del Encanto

Literally meaning “island of enchantment,” this charming restaurant in the depths of Kendall bears a typical casual Latin atmosphere, with quirky table cloths and friendly service that makes the dining experience all the better. The menu’s platters include arroz con gandules – rice with pigeon peas and pork. There’s also delicious mofongo and carne frita – another Puerto Rican dish consisting of mashed plantains and fried beef.

El Jabarito Sandwich

Also located in Kendall, this little shop makes the best Puerto Rican pastelitos and sandwiches. Order a Tripleta with a side of plantains or a powdery Mallorca (a sweet bread originating from the Spanish island of Majorca). Ideal for breakfast or a quick bite, El Jabarito is a must-try.

Pekaditos Mi Viejo San Juan

A fusion of Peruvian and Puerto Rican cuisine, Pekaditos introduces the marriage of Latin food favorites. Opt for a mix of popular appetizers such as the Papa a La Huancaina (Peruvian dish of boiled potato in huancaina sauce) or Asopao de Marinero Soup (a Puerto Rican seafood soup). Major dishes like Carne Frita Mofongo and Chaufa are also on the menu. If you’re looking for a cheap midday meal, pop in Tuesdays to Fridays for their lunch specials or enjoy a night of live music from Thursday to Sundays – there’s even karaoke for those looking to unleash their inner diva. This place shines for its lively atmosphere and good food.

El Bajareque

Bringing Puerto Rican cuisine to the streets of Wynwood’s artsy neighborhood, El Bajareque makes yummy treats such as beef empanadas and classic Borinquen entrees including masas de Puerco (fried pork chunks), all for a few bucks. With fresh ingredients and their homemade dishes from family recipes, this little spot is a local’s best-kept secret.
