The Best Vegetarian And Vegan Restaurants In Malta

Andrew Ricca

The island nation of Malta is equipped with restaurants catering for diverse tastes. In recent years there has been an emergence of vegan and vegetarian restaurants – here are five of the best spots across the island.

Cosmic Food

Cosmic Food

After a series of well-attended catering events hosted atop a rooftop terrace overlooking St. Paul’s Bay, Cosmic Food now has a permanent venue. It is run by a young duo devoted to vegan food, taking pride in finally having made a vegan night out on the island less of a headache. Consciously experimental, guests are presented with an ever-changing menu of homemade vegan and vegetarian Asian-fusion dishes to be enjoyed in a chilled, lounge atmosphere.

The Grassy Hopper

The Grassy Hopper

Highly regarded as one of the island’s best choices when looking for a quick, healthy lunch, The Grassy Hopper is a casual and affordable vegan and vegetarian venue in the center of the capital city, Valletta. Conserving food’s nutrients and offering options reflecting a balanced diet have ranked among the highest of priorities when preparing their super-food rich menu. Favorites include any of the generously portioned veggie burgers and eclectic mix of refreshing, organically-sourced green smoothies.

Open since early 2015, Jangal is a recent addition to Malta’s vegan and vegetarian dining scene, serving a selection of dishes influenced by Indian, Pakistani and Thai cuisine with a bit of twist. Conveniently located in St Julian’s, the country’s foremost entertainment district, this small restaurant is situated within the longer-standing Juuls Reggae Bar. True to its original mission, it sets itself the task of creating an environment that embraces food as much as it does art, music, and poetry.

Although Sharma also serves some meat dishes, its wide selection of vegetarian-friendly options makes it impressive. Both the decor and menu reflect a varied range of influences, from Greek to Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. Prices are on the higher end, not least for its location at the center of the country’s old medieval capital, Mdina, and the views to be enjoyed from its roof terrace.

Tate Cafe Bar

Bar, Cafe, Restaurant, European

Tate, now around for nearly a decade, was the first vegetarian restaurant in the county. Until relatively recently, it was also its only one. It is located on the restored Vittoriosa waterfront, nestled between the impressive sights of Fort St Angelo on one side, and the Malta Maritime Museum on the other. Pizza and pasta dishes, Middle Eastern food, smoothies, and a number of vegan-friendly options are all on the menu. Plentiful outdoor seating space is available in the restaurant’s front terrace, contributing to a truly Mediterranean atmosphere.
