Akureyri is a quaint city in northern Iceland famous for its seafood. The city has centuries of experience preparing dishes in both traditional and modern ways to represent a global mix. Although there are no restaurants in Akureyri catering specifically to vegetarian dishes, the following establishments offer a variety of meat-free, and in some cases vegan, options.

Bryggjan is situated on the waterfront in the oldest building in the area. Being an older structure built sometime in the mid-19th century and made of wood, it was also used as a mechanics headquarters. Its wooden interior makes for a casual atmosphere that is very suitable for families. The kitchen specializes in pizza, offering a wide variety of options with names like The Turf House, The Captain, Mr. Akureyri and The Bank Manager. The pizzas can easily be modified and made vegetarian.

This non-assuming establishment serves some of the best sushi in town, which comes as no surprise as it is the side-restaurant of the owners of Rub23. Small and cozy with bright interiors and an ocean view, Sushi Corner offers great quality sushi at reasonable prices, especially by Icelandic standards. For vegetarians, there are plenty of options, as well as the delectable side dishes like edamame and wakame.

Located downtown at Hotel Kea, this professional and friendly establishment is often packed. Reservations are recommended prior to visiting due to the frequency of large groups. The bistro menu offers a mix of Danish, American and Icelandic cuisine, i.e. hamburgers and local fish. For vegetarians, the menu offers a Mulaberg salad, a variety of baked cheeses, and side vegetable dishes. The bar offers local beer, but the main pull to Mulaberg is the cocktail menu full of concoctions such as Purple Rain, King Hendrick and Goblin.

This genuine Thai restaurant is located in downtown Akureyri and offers many popular Thai dishes based on Icelandic lamb, fish, and beef. However, many of these delicious dishes can be substituted with tofu and/or vegetables such as the tom kha gai, a blend of coconut milk, mushrooms, lime, lemongrass, basil, and coriander. Krua Siam also offers a lunch buffet with a daily special held from 11:30am to 1:30pm, which allows you to make your own special vegetarian blend of Thai specialties.

Strikið is situated on the top floor of a downtown building with optional outdoor seating on the terrace, which is very popular during the summertime. This is definitely one of the more upscale dining establishments in Akureyri. The menu emphasizes local Icelandic ingredients, but with influences from Asian and South American cuisine. Vegetarians can choose between a quinoa and marinated celeriac root dish, vegetarian sushi and a grilled portobello hamburger.
