The Best Star Wars Locations You Can Visit With Culture Trip
You don’t have to hyper-jump your way to a galaxy far, far away in order to live your childhood fantasies. Follow in the footsteps of your favourite Jedi and visit these Star Wars filming locations with Culture Trip.
Mount Etna, Sicily
Sicily’s small cameo in the Star Wars franchise comes from an incredible piece of serendipity – call it movie magic – during the filming of Revenge of the Sith (2005). The film’s iconic climax, which sees Anakin Skywalker complete his turn to the dark side during a fight with his master Obi-Wan Kenobi, takes place on the fiery planet of Mustafar. Conveniently the largest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, erupted while they were filming. George Lucas was sharp enough to send film crews over to Italy to capture some footage, so the lava you see flowing in the film is actual lava flowing from Mount Etna. You’ll get to hike across the volcano, and lunch on a farm that takes advantage of its fertile grounds, on our eight-day Spectacular Sicily adventure.

Reynisfjara, Iceland
Another otherworldly real-life destination that features in Rogue One is this famous black-sand beach in the south of Iceland, which is where the opening scene of the anthology film was shot. The entire region of Vik, including the black sand beach of Mýrdalssandur and the nearby plateau of Hjörleifshöfði, were used to represent planet Eadu. You’ll get to explore this southern region on the last full day of our five-day Volcanic Iceland trip, which features a walk on Reynisfjara beach, followed by an adventurous three-hour glacier hike.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Most people associate this stunning coastal city in Croatia with Game of Thrones, but Dubrovnik was actually one of the main real-life locations used in The Last Jedi (2017). The city filled in as the debauched casino planet of Canto Bight, which might trigger more associations with Monte Carlo, but you can spot multiple structures from Dubrovnik in the film itself, including the main high street, city walls and a secret paddock, where the film’s four-legged Fathiers lived. See how many familiar sights you can spot on our eight-day Coastal Croatia trip, which starts in Split and ends in Dubrovnik.
