Colloquially known as the ‘Cowboy State’, Wyoming is a peak-strewn region of the Western United States, notable for the Eastern Rocky Mountains. This summer, Wyoming plays host to myriad arts and cultural events, from festivals celebrating the arts in Jackson to chomping on Greek delights in Cheyenne. September in Wyoming is packed with culture, here are 10 unmissable events.

For a collection of some of Oklahoma’s best wildlife, landscape and sporting art, head into the Trailside Gallery in Jackson for the annual Fall Gold Exhibition and Sale. This yearly aesthetic fiesta coincides with the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. Participating artists include Brent Cotton, Michael Godfrey, Bonnie Marris, Jim Morgan, George Northup, and many others, some of whom will be in attendance at the artists’ reception on 13 September. Many of the artworks on display will be procurable so be sure to pack your wallet; you might even walk out with some Fall Gold.

Jackson’s Trailside Gallery is hosting Logan Maxwell Hagege’s new exhibition, Changing Light, in which he conjures up quintessential scenes from the American Southwest in a series of figurative and landscape works. Hagege deftly depicts scenes emulating Native American life and culture, framed in the thirsty environs of the Southwest desert; his appetite for dusty scenes developed during youthful sojourns at his grandmother’s house in the California desert. To meet Hagege to discuss his art, there will be an artist’s reception on 13 September. Hagege’s works on display at the Changing Light exhibition will be sold by draw.

The annual Jackson Hole Arts Festival, presented by the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce, hosts in excess of 50 arts-centric events, designed to facilitate the interests and tastes of all family members. This year’s themes will cover the expansive areas of visual, contemporary, culinary, Western landscape, wildlife and Native American arts. Guests will have the opportunity to engage in convivial colloquy with some of the artists topping this year’s bill, including Nancy Dunlop Cawdrey and Joshua Tobey. This year, Tobey will be exhibiting his masterwork, ‘Jackson’s Symphony’ which depicts harmonious Jackson vistas. The festival exhibitions will be held at a variety of galleries around Jackson.

Wyoming’s agricultural roots are the focus of the Homesteader Days and Harvest Festival which takes place in downtown Powell, WY. The festival is affiliated with Powell’s Homesteader Museum where you can learn of the colorful history of both the town and state with the aid of myriad fascinating artifacts. Visitors looking for a feast would do well to slink over to enjoy a harvest chuck wagon breakfast; hearty fare served with Wyoming finesse. The festival also offers frequenters the chance to enjoy live music, peruse the abundant farmer’s market, eyeball the agricultural equipment display and enjoy the rush of the live car and truck show.

If antique tractors and tractor pulls are your thing, then the Encampment Copper Days Festival is a great event. The festival is held annually, the week after Labor Day. Tractors engage in blistering competition, which involves pulling heavy, weighted trailers to ascertain which tractor is in the strongest fettle. Tractor collectors from all over the region flock to Encampment, Wyoming, to eagerly showcase their mechanical wares. There is also a family and community dance held at the Grand Encampment Opera House where the day’s tractor-based excitement boils over into feverish gyrating. The festival is entirely free of charge and should all the tractors induce a ravenous appetite, lunch is available for purchase.

This year, Cheyenne, WY, hosts the Cheyenne Greek Festival – a hub of authentic Greek culture and cuisine. Slither into the depths of a boisterous Greek taverna where you can sup on traditional Greek beverages and jive the night away to the sound of Greek music emitted by the Chris Dokos Trio. A generous lamb or chicken lunch and dinner are served each day; fuel for frolicking in the taverna late into the night. Also available are various manifestations of Greek repast that one can re-energize on before tramping around the cornucopia of Greek delights that is the flea market. Attendance and parking are completely free of charge.

Saddle up and canter down to the Fourth Annual Festival of the Cowboys, which offers visitors the opportunity to experience a traditional Wyoming occurrence. On 8 September the Big Wind Hall in Crowheart will be replete with a seething mass of jocund revelers, excitedly anticipating the thundering hoofs of the rodeo horses that are soon to reverberate around the arena. The ranch rodeo begins at noon and entries are being accepted until 1 September so be sure to sign up if you have got the urge to sit on the back of a furiously writhing horse.

The most majestic of rendezvous is to take place this September in Cody, Wyoming: the Rendezvous Royale. The event showcases and celebrates the best of western arts and includes a sashaying western fashion show and an exhibition of some of the most refined furniture in the west. The Buffalo Bill Art Show Sale offers attendees the chance to purchase some fine western artworks for themselves. Guests are invited to attend a number of informative educational seminars and studio tours as they soak up the best the west has to offer. The event culminates in a sophisticated gala ball (also covered) where black tie, cocktail dresses and coquettish conversation all corral together for a finale fitting of this extravagant event.

Part of the Rendezvous Royale, the Boot Scootin’s Boogie event sees the closure of Cody’s Main Street as hoards of exciting creative types flood in to fill the automobile-shaped void. The festival’s raison d’être is to showcase myriad local talents in a setting where both aesthetic appreciation and feverish procurement are rampant. Guests are invited to partake in an eponymous boogie as live music is slathered over the expectant eardrums of the frenzied guests. The smell of freshly cooked foods pervades the merry atmosphere of the Boot Scootin’ Boogie, enticing those present to try all manner of western produce. The event is free to attend and will take place in all weathers.

The Patron’s Ball is the climactic event that occurs at the denouement of the Rendezvous Royale. The fundraising ball is billed as the ‘premier gala of the Rocky Mountain region,’ a must-see for aspiring local socialites. This year’s ball will be the 38th and will feature the sonorous sounds of the Denny Leroux Orchestra, accompanying gustatory delights prepared by Chef Ryan Boehme and Bravo Catering. Guests can enter the potentially lucrative car raffle where a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 will be available for winning; the draw will take place during the ball itself. Tickets cost $350 per person and can be purchased by contacting the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
