A teardrop in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka promises a lifetime of adventures. There’s a fly-and-flop beach break here if you want it, but the pull of safari drives, tea plantation tours and mountain-top temples will surely be too strong.
The largest city and point of entry for most is Colombo. Though many leave quickly for more rural landscapes, there’s plenty of cultural attractions here to merit a stay (scale the giant Lotus Tower and visit the National Museum) plus a burgeoning gastronomic scene.
After that, Sri Lanka is a choose-your-own-adventure destination. For a wildlife-watching break, head to Yala National Park and search for the elusive leopard, while Minneriya National Park is a good spot to see wild elephants. Visit Mirissa for a whale-watching tour, particularly in March and April when blue whales patrol the waters.
Thrillseeker? Weligama is a top surf spot, while Hikkaduwa combines excellent breaks with a thrumming nightlife. There’s white-water rafting in Kitulgala and fauna-filled treks in the Sinharaja rainforest.
For picturesque cultural activities, head to Sigiriya and climb the giant peak to a hilltop fortress. Also visit Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) for an early morning hike to catch sunrise. Though the view is worth the calf-killing climb alone, the top is also home to a footprint-like impression that’s sacred in the Buddhist, Islamic, Christian and Hindu faiths. Finally, head to Ella and Nuwara Eliya to cut through lush tea plantations and learn about the tea-making process.
The good news is that you don’t have to plan it alone. Join Trips by Culture Trip for an activity-packed adventure and you’ll discover unmissable landmarks and lesser-known wonders with a small-group of like-minded travellers. A Local Insider will guide you and provide expert insight – your job is to relax and enjoy this epic island.
